Message from Department Head – John V. Guttag

July, 2004

By the time you read this, I will no longer be EECS Department Head. Rafael Reif is slated to take over as Head of Course VI on September 1. Rafael has been Associate Department Head from Electrical Engineering for the last five and a half years. Prior to that, he was Director of MTL. Rafael is a terrific guy who will bring energy, leadership, and vision to the job. The department will thrive under his leadership.

The traditional passing of the electron and the bit cane from outgoing Department Head Head John V. Guttag to incoming Head L. Rafael Reif, July 2004, marks the leadership evolution in EECS.

I can’t honestly say that I have enjoyed every day or every aspect of my tenure as Associate Department Head from CS (1993-1998) and then Department Head (1999-2004). I can honestly say that it has been the most rewarding experience of my career. I have had the privilege of participating in the leadership of the best department at the best educational institution in the world. The shared sense of purpose and commitment of the department’s faculty, staff, and alumni made it possible to accomplish many things in which we can all take pride.
